Burpee the Perfect Exercise

Want the best exercise for overall body engagement? I’ve got one word for you: burpee.

I’ve written about the little exercise with the funny name before and there’s a reason for that. If you want to get into shape fast, build strength and explosive power, crank up your metabolism, and kick your cardiovascular system into high gear burpees will do the trick.

In case you missed the description in my article the top five bodyweight exercises here’s a refresher on how you do a burpee:

  1. Start in a squat position with hands on the floor in front of you.
  2. Kick your feet back so you are in a push-up position.
  3. Jump your feet back to the squat position.
  4. Leap up as high as possible from the squat position.

You can do sets or timed repeats, e.g. 15 burpees or 30 seconds worth. To get the most out of it move as fast and jump as high as you can. I guarantee you will feel this one!

It might take a couple to get the rhythm of doing it but once you’re in gear this is the ultimate exercise for total body conditioning. The first thing it does is work both fast and slow-twitch fibers in all your major muscle groups. Each rep hits your chest, arms, deltoids, thighs, hamstrings, and abs. Believe me, you’ll feel the burn! Using your body in this way is also terrific for building your core strength and stability, which is essential both for daily life and your fitness regime.

Burpees awesome for burning fat too. They send your muscles into overdrive and your heart pumping so you burn up to 50% more fat than you would with standard strength training. High-intensity exercises like this are the best, fastest way to blast away unwanted pounds. The added bonus is that you can get a tough workout in just few minutes a day. Sure beats spending hours shuffling along on a treadmill, right?

With burpees you don’t need any equipment apart from your own body and a level surface. So you can bust out a few in the morning before you shower, during half-time of your tag football game, at home after dinner, or whatever. It’s an exercise you control, you do in your own time, and you can make more challenging simply by upping the reps or cutting your rest period between repeats. In short, burpees are pretty much the perfect exercise. All you have to do is do them!
